Be predictable. Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals.
Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available.
If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible.
Keep alert at all times; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes (and ears) off the road.
Whenever possible, cross streets at crosswalks or intersections, where drivers expect pedestrians. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right.

The Mason Firm is pleased to announce that Brian R. Mason has been elected to the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). ABOTA is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious national organizations for trial lawyers.

Founded in 1958, ABOTA is an invitation-only national association of experienced trial lawyers and judges. ABOTA and its members are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the civil jury trial right provided by the Seventh Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. ABOTA membership consists of lawyers across the United States including plaintiff, defense, and judges in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Less than 1% of lawyers in the United States are part of the organization.

The process to become a member starts with the invitation to join by a current member. Brian then had to fill out an extensive application and list all of his jury trials, including the names and phone numbers of all opposing counsel and judges. ABOTA leaders then call the judges and oppossing counsel to vet Brian and determine if he would be a good fit. Additionally, it is a requirement that you have been the lead counsel on a minimum of 10 civil jury trials, which is a rare accomplishment for Brian's age.

After the vetting process the local chapter votes on members and requires 75% approval for membership. If approved, then the national chapter must vote on the membership as well.

As a member, Brian will be able to help with the mission of ABOTA, protecting the right to the civil trial by jury. As the ABOTA website mission statement put its, "America's greatness lies in its people. And in its people lies the foundation of justice -- trial by jury. The Seventh Amendment is a precious right that is increasingly under attack by those who would eliminate justice by the people in favor of justice by the bureaucracy."

Learn to Bike Safely during Bicycle Safety Month

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released a list of important safety techniques for bicyclists of all ages in honor of bicycle safety month. Rules of the Road

The Rules of the Road may seem easy and clear to adults, but to children just starting out we have to teach them those first basic rules. They have to understand the road is a shared space and bicyclists should follow the same rules and responsibilities as drivers including:

Ride in a straight line, single file, in the same direction as traffic.
Obey all traffic signs and signals.
Stop and look left-right-left for traffic before entering a street.
Bikers should use bike lanes whenever available.

Always wear a helmet

Bikers should always wear a helmet that fits level on the head and low on the forehead — one or two finger-widths above your eyebrow. Also, be sure to adjust the slider on both side straps to form a “V” shape under, and slightly in front of, the ears. Lock the slider if possible. The NHTSA has created this helpful flyer that should be reviewed by parents when shopping for a bicycle helmet for their children. The proper helmet can be the difference between a minor fall with no long term injuries and a major concussion or fatal injury.

Study reports that many Uber and Lyft vehicles found to have unrepaired safety defects

More than one in six vehicles have unrepaired defects covered by outstanding safety recalls

NBC News (5/22, 6.14M) reports that “more than one in six vehicles operated by Uber and Lyft drivers has unrepaired defects covered by outstanding safety recalls, according to a new study.” Consumer Reports “examined almost 94,000 vehicles in New York City and Seattle, two cities where ride-sharing has become a popular option.” The study “found that one out of six Uber and Lyft drivers were operating cars, trucks or crossovers with outstanding recalls.” The publication “did not provide details on what repairs were needed.” Experts such former NHTSA Administrator Joan Claybrook “warn that even seemingly insignificant recalls can’t be ignored.” Uber “told The Associated Press it does flag any vehicle in its fleet subject to a “do not drive warning” from the NHTSA.” But these are “issued only when a potential problem is so severe as to raise the serious risk of causing a crash.”

National Hockey League may be facing a concussion crisis

An article in the AP refers to the NHL's battle with concussions as an epidemic

An article appearing in the AP titled “Faces of Concussions: NHL’s head-on battle with an epidemic,” written by Stephen Whyno, reports on the concussions crisis in the National Hockey League (NHL). Last year, the NHL settled a lawsuite for $18.9 million with more than 300 retired players. While the NHL officials consistently deny that there is a conclusive link between repeated blows to the head and the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the article indicates that there are a growing number of former players and researchers who are alarmed by the number of concussions among NHL players and the threat of CTE. The article cites several players who were posthumously diagnosed with CTE and quotes several former players describing their symptoms that they say are due to concussions and repeated blows to the head while playing hockey.
